Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team retooled their coaching staff after the debacle that was their 2021 season. And they’re paying their new staffers top dollar to fix what ails them.

According to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman, Huskers defensive coordinator Eric Chiander is getting a raise. His salary is being bumped from $800,000 in 2021 to $850,000 in 2022 – a $50,000 increase.

Nebraska’s new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple is getting a pretty solid compensation package too. Whipple is receiving a $875,000 salary for his first year with the team.

Whipple has 40 years of coaching experience but is coming off one of his most successful years ever at Pitt. He coached the Panthers into one of the top offenses in college football, an ACC title, a Peach Bowl appearance and made QB Kenny Pickett a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Erik Chinander’s contract has been made public by Nebraska. The 42-year-old defensive coordinator received a $50K raise and a one-year extension through Dec. 31, 2023. He will receive $850,000 this year.

Nebraska is heading into a year of massive change – and not just for the coaching staff.

Longtime starting quarterback Adrian Martinez, the team’s starter since Scott Frost’s first year, has departed. Former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson should be the new starter.

The Scott Frost era has been met with disappointment at almost every turn. They have yet to reach a bowl game, let alone have a winning season, in his four years as head coach.

The Huskers are committed to making it worth with Frost, but their patience can’t be infinite. If his assistants can’t help him get the job done, 2022 could be their final years with the team.
